Although steel cooperage was in use before Prohibition, it didn't see widespread use until after prohibition and even then wood cooperage was still in use by some smaller breweries until after WWII. Generally, the larger, more financially well heeled brewers were the first to embrace new technology, in this case, steel, upending 100s of years of wood beer barrels. This Schlitz barrel, apparently undated, would seem to be at the earlier end of the spectrum.
